[fashion] Happy International Gyaru Day! 10/09!

Happy International Gyaru Day! I didn’t know there was such a holiday, but gyaru Lizzie from the UK posted about it today on their blog and I thought it was perfect. October 9, or 10/9 stands for shopping center Shibuya 109 in Tokyo where most of the trendy gyaru-related brand shops are located, makes sense. I have summarized gyaru in many of the posts below, but basically gyaru, a Japanese street fashion of the 2000s that had basically died out in the past 10 years, seems to be making a small revival in Japan and international gyarus are celebrating. Although I am not a gyaru in that I’m too old and tired to really put in the time and effort for the makeup and hair essential for gyaru, I still wear himekaji, which is the casual version of hime gyaru.

Here is a recent himekaji (since I didn’t want overstyle my hair or do my nails for hime gyaru even today lol) idea for coord I put on today to try out. The dress/tunic is Liz Lisa, also the shoes and rings, everything else is off-brand or handmade. I did my best to capture the gyaru makeup which is not easy, I’ll have to post the closeup shots another time.

And here is a super blurry and hilariously fitting photo of my attempt at a coord using my remade Jewel Leopard jumperskirt from Metamorphose, which to me is kind of hime gyaru, I’m sure that was the intent. The headbow is the waistbow and the choker also came with the set, though I did not wear the matching socks because ummm it was hot and also I forgot. The bag is Maison de Fleurs My Melody, rings from Liz Lisa, everything else off-brand. See the refashioning sewing post here!

I hope you like this impromptu coord post and little journey down memory lane of my past gyaru and himekaji looks. I highly recommend checking out Lizzie’s comprehensive gyaru lifestyle blog and Youtube channel, along with the Japanese gyarus she links to. If you are interested in this type of street fashion, I recommend trying it out, there are many substyles under gyaru that can be super inclusive and fun, though like I mentioned in previous fashion blog posts, gyaru overall is still very time intensive.
